Iowa sheriff to learn about homeland security in Israel

Polk County Sheriff Bill McCarthy has been chosen by the National Sheriff's Association to travel from Iowa to Israel to learn about homeland security measures. The NSA has organized and funded the trip in an effort to gain knowledge from law enforcement officials who have extensive experience with identifying and combating terrorist activities.

North Carolina residents have a new way to stay updated on crime in the unincorporated area of Durham County. The Durham County Sheriff's Office and BAIR Analytics Inc. recently partnered to provide an online crime map called RAIDS Online (www.raidsonline.com) that maps and analyzes crime data, alerts Durham residents about crimes in their area and allows the sheriff's office to tell the public quickly about crimes as they occur.

The federal program known as Secure Communities has begun across Massachusetts, and backers say it will slow crime by identifying undocumented immigrant offenders with greater ease and targeting them for deportation. Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson said he believes the new system will prevent crimes.

FBI: Number of officers slain on duty increased in 2011

Seventy-two law enforcement officers in the U.S. were slain in the line of duty in 2011, an increase of 16 over the previous year, according to an FBI report. The report does not include reasons for the rise. "Each of these losses is devastating," FBI Director Robert Mueller said in a statement, "and each one reminds us that the safety and freedom we enjoy come only at great cost."

Standoff continues over new jail staffing in Anderson County, Tenn.

A new $1.7 million minimum-security lockup next to the current Anderson County Jail in Tennessee will be ready to use by mid-June, officials said. But the 14,000-square-foot dormitory-style facility, designed to house 128 inmates, will likely remain empty as a high-profile standoff pitting Sheriff Paul White against County Mayor Myron Iwanski and some county commissioners continues.

Steele: More changes are needed to control prison growth in Oklahoma

Oklahoma House Speaker Kris Steele, who led a three-year effort to pass legislation intended to control prison growth and change how Oklahoma handles prison matters, challenged lawmakers to continue similar efforts to reduce the state's nation-leading incarceration rates. "The tide has truly turned," said Steele, who in 2011 authored a measure expanding the types of inmates eligible for community sentencing and GPS monitoring.

In a blow to Illinois' sweeping eavesdropping law, a federal appeals court blocked its enforcement in cases where someone is recording a police officer at work. It is the most serious legal challenge to the measure — one of the strictest in the nation — and adds momentum to efforts by some state lawmakers to overhaul the legislation, whose constitutionality has been questioned.

Border Patrol officials have expanded the "zero tolerance" zone of illegal immigration to cover all 210 miles of the Del Rio Sector and other stretches of the border in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Yet, the so-called Streamline strategy has become a political flash point in the border security debate, with some immigration hawks, including U.S. Rep. John Culberson, R-Houston, lobbying to expand it along the entire length of U.S.-Mexico border.

Las Vegas Metro Police don't have dashboard cameras, but officers will begin testing one type of body-worn camera with hopes of putting them into regular use within the next fiscal year. But Metro might have to first defend itself in court. The Las Vegas Police Protective Association is not backing down from its contention such cameras can't be forced upon officers without first negotiating with the union.
